DEPARTMENT OF MIDWIFERY
Head of Department Prof. Dr. Zeliha KOÇ
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Midwifery education in our country is carried out at the undergraduate level in universities in accordance with the protocol signed between the Ministry of Health and YÖK in 1992. In this context, the Department of Midwifery of our Faculty of Health Sciences, as Ondokuz Mayıs University, trains midwives to work in health services from the 1997-1998 academic year to the present day. It seems that the World Health Organization (WHO) has a series of conferences and declarations starting with the slogan “Health for All” in parallel with changing and developing health requirements. The common main theme of all conferences is equality in health, equity, preventive health services and health protection – development, ensuring community participation. With the motto of "Health for All in the 21st Century", the World Health Organization (WHO) stresses the importance of the education that can help build a bridge between clinical and public health practice, which prepares health professionals to provide well-educated, preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative services, for the development of human resources for health services. A midwife is defined as a person who has been trained to provide family planning counseling for the care of the newborn, a person who provides the necessary care and counseling during pregnancy and after birth, and who assists normal births under his / her own responsibility. For that, they have a major role in protecting and improving the health of society and preventing maternal and infant mortality. Among health professionals, along with their roles, midwives are the health professionals who communicate most with the patient both in the clinic and in community health practices. For this reason, midwives' education occupies an important place in health education. Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Midwifery, since its establishment, has worked with dedication to educate midwives who can make the difference for the care of healthy/sick people and has always been open to changes as a requirement of health development.
